To quote Ridley Scott, “Life isn’t black and white. It is a million gray areas, don’t you find?”
Oh yes, I do. Most days I wish for the clarity and definition of black and white, but rarely is it there. Even where the color name is concerned gray is spelled three ways now. GRAY is the traditional American spelling. Europeans spell it GREY. Canadians are split on the spelling. Now GREIGE has become popular for a gray/beige color.
The GREIGE spelling threw me when I first saw it, as I come from a textile background. Greige means a fabric in its raw state, as it comes off the loom. Before they bleach, scour (clean), heat-set or put any finish on it fabric, it is considered greige. Sherwin-Williams has even named a color Perfect Greige. I wonder if the word greige, referring to a color will stay around long enough to make is a new part of the Merriam-Webster.
If you haven’t figured it out, all of this weeks Friday Favorites are pins of projects painted in one of our four gray colors: Silverhill Fog, Smoky Mountain Gray, Seattle Mist and Pittsburgh Gray. (Notice that we use the American spelling. We are after all, an American company with American made products.)
Silverhill Fog is our lightest gray and Pittsburgh Gray is the darkest. Seattle Mist falls between the Silverhill and Pittsburgh. Smoky Mountain gray is a moody, green-blue gray that responds to surroundings.
Silverhill Fog is our newest addition to our gray family. Released this summer, it has quickly become a favorite with many painters since it is soft gray with the slightest hint of blue. I love this classic teacart painted Silverhill Fog with the French-inspired stencil.

As the sun and clouds move over the Great Smoky Mountains their color changes as can the demeanor of the landscape. Such is the way with the moody Smoky Mountain Gray. A gray with undertones of green and blue, I love to watch a piece of furniture painted Smoky Mountain change its color as it is paired into different settings.
Can you see the blues and greens in this close up?

Maybe a distance shot is better. You can see the blues and greens very well in this pin.

Last but never least is Pittsburgh Gray. It is a darker gray with brown undertones. Pittsburgh Gray has always had a loyal following and its fan base keeps getting larger and larger. I feel I would be hunted down and tarred and feathered if I tried to retire this color. Actual, a customer told me I would be…. If you have never painted with it, you really should, It may become your BPCF (Best Paint Color Forever).
Pittsburgh Gray looks great distressed, as shown here:

It also is perfectly at home dressed up.
